Variety the Children's Charity of St. Louis (Variety) is seeking a talented Human Resources (HR) Generalist to play a key role in supporting the people operations and employee experience initiatives of our organization. We are looking for a proactive, detail-oriented HR profession who excels at problem solving, communication and creating positive employee experiences while helping foster a mission driven culture with professionalism, empathy and efficiency.

Position Overview:
The Human Resources (HR) Generalist will manage essential HR functions that impact the team’s experience at every stage of their employment with Variety. From recruitment and onboarding to professional development and offboarding, the HR Generalist will play an integral role in maintaining a high performing and mission driven team.
Key Responsibilities
Staffing and Recruitment
- Collaborate with hiring managers to understand staffing needs and create or adjust current job descriptions.
- Coordinate the recruitment process including job postings, candidate screenings, interviewing, and candidate selection with the hiring manager.
- Assist with the development of an inclusive and diverse recruitment strategy to attract high-quality talent.
Onboarding and Off-Boarding
- Enhance and execute an effective onboarding program that integrates new hires into the organization's culture.
- Coordinate with managers to ensure a smooth transition for new employees.
- Manage the offboarding process, coordinate exit interviews and ensure all documentation is complete.
Payroll
- Manages all payroll functions for permanent (~20) and seasonal (~150) employees including processing bi-weekly payroll through a third-party payroll service, reviewing reports and ensuring all payroll information is accurate and up to date.
- Act as the primary contact for employees with questions or issues related to payroll, ensuring a positive experience and prompt resolution of inquiries.
Benefits Administration
- Administer employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other organization-sponsored programs.
- Partner with the CFO/CAO on annual benefits review, vendor negotiations, and evaluation of benefit plan offerings.
- Act as the primary contact for employees with questions or issues related to benefits, ensuring a positive experience and prompt resolution of inquiries.
Employee Relations and Culture
- Serve as a resource to employees, addressing questions and providing guidance on HR policies.
- Promote and uphold a culture of empathy, collaboration, and accountability through proactive engagement and conflict resolution strategies.
- Coordinate all employee satisfaction and recognition programs to promote engaged and committed employees.
- Coordinate with leadership to organize team building activities, enhancing employee engagement.
- Coach managers on best practices for managing difficult conversations, maintaining fairness, and consistency in handling employee grievances.
Training and Development
- Identify training needs and coordinate professional development opportunities for staff.
- Support managers in developing individualized training plans to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Assist with development and execution of performance review processes and goal setting.
Compliance and Policy Administration
- Support the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures.
- Maintain and update HR policies/protocols to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain the employee handbook, making revisions as necessary and communicating changes to employees.
- Stay informed of relevant employment law and regulations, recommending updates as necessary.
- Manage employee files and HR records in compliance with organizational standards, legal requirements and best practices.
- Prepare HR-related documents such as employment verification letters, disciplinary letters, and employee communications.
General HR Support
- Manage all payroll and HRM Systems.
- Advise the CFO/CAO on key HR matters, including leadership development, workforce planning, and employee relations, ensuring that HR practices support the organization's vision and culture.
- Contribute to the ongoing improvement of HR processes and policies to align with best practices.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1 to 3 years of work experience and knowledge of HR or related functions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills to diverse audiences, both oral and written, and ability to coach, consult and facilitate.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work accurately and meet deadlines.
- Self-starter.
- Integrity, credibility, and commitment to the mission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in HR / HR Management.
- SHRM Certification.
- Experience in or with non-profit organizations.
- Proficiency in HRIS Systems.
- Payroll Experience.
Schedule & Location
- This is a full-time (40 hours/week), primarily on-site position based at Variety’s office near Westport Plaza in St. Louis, Missouri. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings or weekends as needed.
